Milton borders directly to the towns of Alpharetta and Roswell in the south and is about 30 km north of Atlanta.

On 9 March 2006, the Senate of the State of Georgia adopted a draft law establishing the new city of Milton, signed on 28 March by Governor Sonny Perdue.

According to the 2010 census, the then 32,661 inhabitants were distributed to 11,659 inhabited households, an average of 2.80 people per household. There are 12,328 households in total.
75.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.28 persons. In 46.5% of households, children under the age of 18 and in 12.7% of households, people aged 65 or over lived.
